Creosote - What are the alternatives?

As most of you will know, the use of creosote is now a no-no. Has anyone found a satisfactory alternative? Personally, I do find it frustrating that there is now a proliferation of wood finishing products for the garden - some of which are suitable for "rough sawn" wood and others only suitable for "dressed" wood.
