The dreaded Dutch Elm disease is now in full swing in the North East of Scotland. Some of us thought that we were going to miss it. The Elms in the North East are mainly Wych Elms and have been slow in succumbing to the disease.

I am often asked if the wood from a diseased Elm tree is usable - and it is, certainly, in the first couple of years after being hit. It looks as though the disease causes the wood to deteriorate more quickly than it would if an undiseased tree were cut down and left.

I am not a biologist and can only speak about the practical implications of this for the furniture-maker. If someone has more in-depth knowledge, it would be interesting to hear their views on the forum.
